2019 — 2021 · Online Delivery
Staff Software Engineer
I joined Grubhub in 2019 to work on the next-generation front end for grubhub.com. Most of that turned out to be the machinery of moving the site off Preact and onto React: Preact had not delivered what it promised, React was improving quickly, and the ecosystem had settled on React.
March 8, 2020 was my last day commuting into Manhattan. The pandemic brought new rules and regulations right through the following year, and they made any product hard to hold still. We would be changing something to meet a new regulation, or pivoting to support restaurants through a brutal stretch, or improving delivery for people who could not leave home. A great deal of reacting, and a number of projects that never launched.
It settled something for me. I was far more productive at home, and I was not going back to three hours a day on the road accomplishing nothing. When Grubhub called us back to the office I started looking, and my curiosity about blockchain turned out to be the way in.
