Jet was a genuinely good place to work. For a while it was a small, well-funded experimentation lab for Walmart: we got to work on interesting problems without the constraints of a large corporation, in a beautiful building in Hoboken looking across at Manhattan. It was, oddly, the first place I had worked that had a startup feel as I understand that now. It had been a startup that grew quickly, and it still had the spirit.
It never felt like Walmart at all, right up until they decided the experiment was over. Then we were absorbed. They thought they might use some of what we were building as the basis for a new walmart.com, but by then we were simply part of Walmart, and that was not where I wanted to work or a project I wanted to work on.
Jet 2.0 was a great deal of fun. It just never went anywhere, because it was shut down.
Led an experimental, performance-focused rearchitecture of the Jet product page, cutting both first paint and time to interactive by almost 90% on the pages that shipped
Built the client-side integrity controls behind PCI compliance for checkout — capturing the shape of every page during the build so the firewall could verify that the JavaScript going out was exactly what we shipped, across both the static and the dynamic parts of the page, with CSP alongside it
Tracked down memory leaks and other server-side performance issues as we completed the transition to Next.js
Helped architect specialized department stores for Jet 2.0, for brands including Apple and Nike
Added full WAI-ARIA accessibility to the global site navigation
Migrated significant portions of the site from the legacy CMS to the new Walmart CMS
